BBHewee Salut Scott. Est-ce que tu veux bien introduire Scott Nelson et MIKE au public francais s’il-te-plait?
Scott Nelson J’ai 36 ans, je suis ne a Orlando, Floride le 18 mars 1970. Je suis graphiste et dessine du wear depuis 1986, et je suis implique dans le streetwear depuis sa naissance. C’est quelque chose que j’ai toujours fait, et je vis le streetwear depuis 20 ans. Ma marque MIKE et le concept original etaient de creer une marque-hommage a celui que je considere le meilleur joueur de basketball de tous les temps, Michael Jordan. J’avais le sentiment que Brand Jordan s’essoufflait en termes de design depuis une dizaine d’annees, et je voulais ajouter une touche de streetwear au truc. Donc j’ai cree MIKE…
BBHewee J’ai vu une partie de la collection a Barcelone portee par Dave [White] ou Kish… Il me semble que tu diversifies la gamme vers d’autres interpretations de Air Jordan. Est-ce que tu veux bien partager avec nous quelques petites infos sur ce qui est a venir?
Scott Nelson En ce qui concerne les nouveaux designs, j’essaie toujours d’utiliser des elements du passe et les actualiser pour qu’ils correspondent a ce que j’estime etre le streetwear aujourd’hui. J’ai aussi beaucoup travaille dernierement sur le design de sneakers, c’est une de mes veritables passions. J’ai eu la chance de grandir a cote de l’un des premiers magasins d’usine Nike sur la cote Est. Dans le milieu des annees 80, je n’arretais pas de skater et jouer au basketball dans des sneakers Nike venant de l’outlet. J’ai porte des Jordans 1, des Convention Hi and Lo, Air Ships, Dunks, et Air Force 1. Parce que les paires pour le basketball etaient beaucoup plus solides. J’ai aussi travaille sur pas mal d’accessoires dernierement.
BBHewee Le sofa avec l’elephant print a ete une superbe operation communication, avec une idee de base originale. Quel est le prochain projet un peu extraordinaire?
Scott Nelson Le sofa etait et est toujours superbe. Pas mal de gens dans le monde du streetwear se sont essayes au mobilier jusqu’a un certain point, mais la, sincerement, regarde le sofa et le concept derriere! Inspire par George Nelson (ndlr: fondateur du modernisme american avec Charles et Ray Eames), il a ete construit avec des displays de sneakers integres!!! A suivre: peut-etre vehicule et/ou tout autre mode de transport.
BBHewee Si tu pouvais collaborer avec quelqu’un aujourd’hui, qui choisirais-tu? Ou veux-tu continuer independemment.
Scott Nelson J’ai quelques idees. J’adore ce que fait Dave White, et le rencontrer a ete une chance. C’est quelqu’un d’entier, et son travail parle pour lui. Sinon je connais de vieux pionniers de l’industrie, donc il y a quelques possibilites. Mais la collaboration la plus logique serait avec Brand Jordan. Je pense que le monde est pret pour accueillir cela.
BBHewee Justement, que penses-tu des produits Jordan qui sortent en ce moment, retro ou pas?
Scott Nelson Les Jordans qui sortent aujourd’hui sont tres futuristes, trop peut-etre. La technologie utilisee est absolument superbe, mais je pense que les designs sont trop en avance sur leur temps. Regarde partout et tu vois que tout le monde porte des Dunks et des AF1, des paires des annees 80! Je pense qu’une paire avec un design des annees 80 mais une technologie avancee represente le compromis ideal. Les retros sont bien, mais doivent etre ameliorees, on dirait des fausses…
BBHewee Jordan preferee? Moment prefere dans la carriere de MJ? Meilleur match des Bulls? Quelqu’un aura-t-il un jour le meme impact que MJ?
Scott Nelson Ma Jordan preferee est la III, elle est juste a un autre niveau! J’ai une paire avec laquelle je skate, et elles sont fantastiques. Mon moment prefere: le match contre les Knicks ou il est sur la ligne de fond, dribble vers l’exterieur puis reviens pour planter ce fameux jam. Il y a tellement de highlights de MJ, mais celui-ci est vraiment special. Mon match prefere est celui contre Orlando en 90-91 ou Jordan plante 49 points en portant un jersey avec le numero 12 et sans nom. Apparemment quelqu’un avait vole son maillot avant le match! Quelqu’un aura-t-il le meme impact? Je doute sincerement.
BBHewee Nike, Brand Jordan ou MJ lui-meme t’ont-ils dit ce qu’ils pensaient de MIKE?
Scott Nelson Le feedback de Nike sur MIKE a ete genial. J’ai appris que Gemo Wong, le head-designer pour Brand Jordan, et Mark Parker, le CEO de Nike, etaient tous les deux des fans de MIKE, donc je leur ai bien entendu envoye des packs promotionnels. J’ai aussi envoye des packs a Darrell Stanton (skateur pro pour Element) et Paul Rodriguez (skateur pro chez Nike). Je connais aussi pas mal de monde qui travaille regulierement pour Nike, et ils ont tous soutenu MIKE. Le feedback general pour le travail et le design de MIKE a ete genial, et je serai eternellement reconnaissant pour cela.

BBHewee Introduce yourself and your brand to the French audience: concept, birth, range, etc…
Scott Nelson My name is Scott Nelson , I’m 36 years of age. Born in Orlando, Florida. . I have been designing clothing and doing graphics since 1986. I have been involved in street wear since it’s infancy. It is what I’ve always been doing and something I have lived throughout the last 20 years. My brand MIKE and the original concept was to create a tribute brand to whom I feel is the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. I felt that the brand Jordan lacked some serious good design for the past 10 years and I wanted to put a street influenced twist on things, so I came up with MIKE.
BBHewee I saw part of the range in Barcelona worn by Dave (White) or Kish… It looks like you’re slowly diversifying into different interpretations of Air Jordan. Any insight into what Mike will be bringing out soon.
Scott Nelson As far as new design goes for MIKE, I always try to use bits and pieces of the past and give them a twist on what I feel is going on in the present. I’ve been working a lot on footwear design, this is one of my true loves. I was fortunate to grow up nearby one of the first NIKE outlets on the east coast. In the mid 80’s, I was playing basketball and skateboarding tons in all of the NIKE basketball trainers from this NIKE outlet. I was sporting NIKE Air Jordan 1’s, Convention hi’s and lo’s, Air Ships, Dunks, and Air force 1’s. Reason why? Because the basketball trainers lasted much longer. I have also been working on some serious accessories.
BBHewee The crackle/elephant print couch was a pretty cool PR operation, on top of a nice idea… What sort of out-of the-ordinary item is next?
Scott Nelson The custom built MIKE cement crackle pattern sofa was and is still amazing… Several people in the street wear world today have experimented with furniture on some sort of level but, nothing of this magnitude. Come on and take a look at it and the concept behind it for a second! The sofa influenced by George Nelson, was built with built-in footwear display cases!!!!! Next up could be some sort of vehicle and or mode of transportation.
BBHewee If you could collaborate with anyone today, who would you like that to be? Or do you just think that with everyone collaborating with everyone, it’s just plain better to be doing your own thing for now?
Scott Nelson Collaborations… Yeah, I have some ideas. I love what Dave White does and meeting him was a blessing. The dude is a solid person and his work speaks volumes. I know several old pioneers in this industry personally, so there are possibilities. However, I think the most logical since is to do it with JORDAN!!!! I believe that the world is ready for this collabo.
BBHewee What’s your view on the Jordans coming out now, retros or new?
Scott Nelson The Jordans coming out nowadays are very space age, the technology is mind-bending but, I believe the design is too advance for society. Look around and you see everybody wearing Dunks and AF 1’s. These are footwear from the 80’s. I believe a 80’s look with the technology inside is the move. The retros are good but, they have to get better. They seem like bootlegs…
BBHewee Favorite Jordan? Favorite Jordan moment? Favorite Bulls game? Will anyone ever have the same cultural impact on urban cultures?
Scott Nelson Favorite Jordan for me is the AJ 3. This trainer is on a whole other level. I have a pair that I skate in and they are great. Favorite Jordan moment. The game against the Knicks when he was on the baseline, dribbled out and came back with the jam. There are so many great highlights of MJ, that it’s tough to really choose, but that one sticks out. Favorite Bulls game. Against Orlando in the 1990-1991 season, he dropped 49 points on the Orlando Magic wearing number 12 with no name on the back of the jersey. Apparently somebody stole his jersey before the game. Will anyone ever have the same cultural impact on urban cultures? I seriously doubt it.
BBHewee Have you ever had any feedback from Nike, JB or MJ himself?
Scott Nelson The feedback on MKE from people at NIKE has been all love. I found out that Gemo Wong-Head Designer for brand JORDAN and Mark Parker-CEO of NIKE were both fans of what I’ve been doing with MIKE, so naturally I started sending them promotional packages. I have also been sending promotional packages to Darrell Stanton (professional skateboarder for Element) and Paul Rodriguez (professional skateboarder for NIKE). I also know many people who work with NIKE on a regular basis and they have all been real supportive of MIKE. The overall love for the work and design that I have done with MIKE is amazing and for that, I will forever be grateful.
